About Bennett Valley

Bennett Valley is a picturesque northwest-to-southeast trending valley located in Sonoma County, California, situated at the southeast extremity of Santa Rosa. The valley is approximately one mile wide in its northwestern portion and extends into the Sonoma Mountains. Named after Gold Rush settler James Bennett, who was later elected to the California State Assembly, the valley has evolved from its agricultural roots into one of Sonoma County's most sought-after residential areas and wine regions.

The valley is naturally defined by three mountain peaks: Bennett Mountain, Taylor Mountain, and Sonoma Mountain, all dormant volcanoes whose ancient volcanic ash enriches the local soils. Bennett Valley is drained by Matanzas Creek, which flows northwesterly along the valley floor, creating the watershed that defines this unique wine-growing region. The area receives approximately 35-40 inches of annual rainfall, primarily during the winter months from November through April, followed by warm, dry summers.

Though it maintains a peaceful, rural atmosphere with rolling hills and vineyards, Bennett Valley offers easy access to all the amenities of Santa Rosa and the greater Wine Country region. The neighborhood features a diverse mix of housing, from midcentury ranch homes and modern condominiums to sprawling estates and working vineyards, making it popular with families, retirees, and professionals alike.

Historical Note: While vineyards flourished in Bennett Valley during the mid-1800s with an estimated 2,000 acres under cultivation, Prohibition and phylloxera devastated the local wine industry. It wasn't until 1977, with the founding of Matanzas Creek Winery, that Bennett Valley's viticultural potential was rediscovered, leading to the establishment of the Bennett Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2003.
