A Hidden Gem of Sonoma County

Bennett Valley is a picturesque valley tucked between Taylor Mountain, Sonoma Mountain, and Bennett Mountain in Sonoma County, California. Located just southeast of Santa Rosa, the valley stretches roughly eight miles with gentle slopes, fertile clay soils, and the winding path of Matanzas Creek flowing along its floor.

Named for James N. Bennett—a Missourian who arrived by wagon train during the Gold Rush of 1849 and later served in the California State Assembly—Bennett Valley has been a thriving agricultural region for well over 150 years. Today it is recognized as a premier wine grape growing area, a destination for nature lovers, and a close-knit community where farming roots run deep.

Cool fog and marine breezes sweep through the Petaluma Gap into the valley, creating ideal conditions for growing Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. The Bennett Valley AVA, established in 2003, encompasses approximately 8,140 acres and is one of Sonoma County's most distinguished appellations.

Bennett Valley's history stretches back to the Pomo, Wappo, and Miwok peoples who inhabited this fertile land for generations. European settlement began in the 1840s when General Mariano Vallejo distributed land grants in the area. James N. Bennett purchased his property from Vallejo in 1852, was elected to the California State Assembly in 1853, and introduced the bill that made Santa Rosa the county seat. The mountain and valley were later named in his honor.

By the 1860s, pioneer vintner Isaac DeTurk had planted vineyards at the base of Bennett Mountain and established the valley's first winery, Belle Mount, launching a winemaking tradition that continues to this day. By 1884, the valley had roughly 15,000 acres of land and a population of about 300 residents engaged in farming grapes, apples, hay, wheat, and livestock.

Wineries & Vineyards

Bennett Valley's cool-climate vineyards produce some of Sonoma County's most distinguished wines. With fewer than 700 planted acres, production is small and the quality is exceptional.

Matanzas Creek Winery

Founded in 1977, Matanzas Creek helped put Bennett Valley back on the winemaking map. Known worldwide for Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and its stunning lavender gardens, the estate is a must-visit Sonoma County destination.
